Original blue cloth with elaborate blind lettering and decoration and colour pictorial plate mounted to upper board, gilt lettering and decoration to spine. GOOD copy, binding square and reasonably tight, corners bumped, cloth covers…grubby and dulled, plate remains bright with small chipped loss to top edge, gilt dulled, edges rubbed and worn, starting to crack at both hinges, heavy foxing and toning to prelims, neat pencil inscription on front pastedown, all plates present but with some damp staining to top edges not affecting the pictures, some pages also damp stained. Illustrated…by Florence Mary Anderson. 4 colour plates of fairies, all present and in very good order. Edith Howes (1872-1954) was a New Zealand teacher and writer. Born in England, her family emigrated to New Zealand when she was a child. Her education led her to become an elementary school teacher. During her tenure, she noted that the teaching environment was held in small poorly ventilated rooms where teachers relied on rote methods and applications of corporal punishment. She instigated reforms which led to better school buildings, smaller class sizes and experiential learning. She also noted the lack of good books for teaching young children so she began to write some of her own. In all, she wrote 30 books for children, some of which ran into multiple printings. After retiring from teaching in 1919 she continued to write including some adult fiction All books are sent free by courier postage within New Zealand. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.
