In IBM mainframecomputers, a Coupling Facility or CF is a piece of computer hardwarewhich allows multiple processors to access the same data. A ParallelSysplex relies on one or more Coupling Facilities. A coupling facilityis a mainframe processor, with memory and special channels, and aspecialised operating system called Coupling Facility Control Code. Ithas no I/O devices, other than the CF links. The information in the CFresides entirely in memory as CFCC is not a virtual memory operatingsystem. A CF typically has a large memory - of the order of severalgigabytes. In principle any IBM mainframe can serve as a couplingfacility. The CF runs no application software.
