Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. OVERALL CONDITION: NEAR FINE/VERY GOOD Published in 1966 by Martin Secker & Warburg in London. First U.K. edition, first printing. In original grey cloth boards with spine gilt lettering and decoration and original dust jacket. Octavo, 304 pages. Cool Hand Luke is a novel by Donn Pearce. The novel is based on Pearce's personal experiences while incarcerated with a Florida prison road gang. The story is told in a first-person narrative from the perspective of a convict in a central Florida prison. He works on a chain gang maintaining the berms of highways. He recounts the story of a "legendary" fellow inmate whose nickname is Cool Hand Luke. According to Pearce, about a third of Cool Hand Luke is his own story, a third is based on the stories he heard while doing time at Raiford, and another third is pure fiction. After writing the first draft, he re-wrote it five times over a six-year period. It was adapted into the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke starring Paul Newman and featuring George Kennedy in an Oscar-winning performance. The most oft-repeated quote from the film, "What we've got here is a failure to communicate", never appeared in the novel. Pearce said the guards were "100% redneck", without multi-syllable vocabularies, who would never have said such an intellectually astute phrase." CONDITION: The book is in NEAR FINE (some would say FINE give its age) collectible condition. Colorful, unfaded, clean boards. Square spine, firm hinges and joints, tight pages. Lightly rubbed spine tips and edges and a former bookstore stamp on rear pastedown else FINE. Interior is clean with no writing or wear - text is bright white. The dust jacket is in VERY GOOD- condition - price clipped and right bottom of right flap deeply clipped with some loss of writing. Colorful cover art and very light soiling (impressive given white jacket). Edge wear creasing, particularly along top of flaps, a few tears on front panel chipping and small tears. Please note: As a collector of rare books for over 35 years, I know what it's like to receive items not matching the seller's descriptions or that were poorly packaged and damaged in transit. That is why I offer a 100% satisfaction, money back guarantee, and go to great lengths to accurately describe my rare, signed and collectible books and post pictures of the "actual book." I carefully package and ship your newly acquired treasure(s) and ship within 1 business day of receiving your order.
