Working at the nexus of painting and photography, William Klein conceived this original series when he was in the process of reviewing other photographers' contact sheets for a film he was making. Referencing the age of film photography, when photographers selected images by circling individual negatives on a contact sheet with brightly colored grease pencils, Klein's works invent a new kind of art object that organically marries painting and photography. The resulting pieces are enormous mural-sized works in which bold, kinetic color frames and reframes enlarged black-and-white images from throughout his career. Klein's iconic fashion and street photography, always gritty and bold, is given a new immediacy and relevance in this second life. In his foreword to this edition, Klein describes these works as "all brush strokes and jubilation. The jubilation of painting recall[s] the celebration of taking the photo." 140 pages, b&w and color. L'idée est venue, à William Klein, quand il a proposé au CNP de faire une série de films courts qui était basée sur la circulation de la caméra sur une planche de contacts, commentée par son auteur. L'idée était séduisante. Elle avait le double mérite de montrer comment se déroule une prise de vue et d'entendre un photographe expliciter ses choix. De nombreux photographes ont répondu à la sollicitation, Raymond Depardon, Helmut Newton, Don McCullin, Leonard Freed, Mario Giacomelli, entre autres. Devant l'intérêt et le succès de ces films, William Klein s'est pris à considérer d'un autre il, l'objet "planche de contacts". Et il voit loin. Car il va exemplifier l'importance qu'il donne à ses choix, en isolant l'image élue, en la tirant en grand format, en la cernant d'épaisses lignes de peinture, rouge, jaune ou bleue, qui insistent sur le désir qu'il a d'arrêter le regard, de sidérer le passant ou le lecteur en le forçant à considérer non plus seulement l'image et sa parfaite composition, mais la virtuosité d'une autre architecture, d'un cadrage supplémentaire qui ne laisse aucune place à l'hésitation ni à la dérobade. Rien de décoratif dans la démarche, mais la volonté de créer un pont graphique entre peinture et photographie qui se veut apprécié comme tel, une uvre comme on n'en a jamais vue. (.) Toute intervention de William Klein est au service d'une voix qui affirme ce qu'il pense avec une sorte de désinvolture mais avec le sentiment d'une juste revendication, celle du droit d'expression.
