Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good -. First Edition. 323 pages, frontis, illustrations, maps, slight wear to jacket which has the light pink tone to front and back. An important account of the Battle of the Washita and the efforts of the military, under the leadership of General Philip Sheridan, to defeat the hostile Cheyennes, Comanches, and Kiowa Indians. The author's work is critical of Custer and is considered to be an important counter-balance to the many works that are supportive of Custer's actions. ".a vitriolic attack on Custer and the Army war policy."--Tal Luther. Since Bates was strongly pro-Custer and Brill was violently against him, the review develops as a defense of Custer's actions at the Washita and during the 1868 campaign by one of the General's most ardent supporters. "Even by today's standards, Brill is considered radical for his views"--O'Keefe.

Slight wear to edges, offsetting to end-papers, jacket soiled and has fading to spine and edges, inscribed by the author to "My friend and collaborator Claude Hensley with best wishes Chas Brill." Signed again by Brill a couple inches below his other signature. Hensley was an "Oklahoma newspaperman who had befriended a number of Washita survivors on both sides." He photographed several locations of the battlefield in the 1930 and the images of "the battlefield today," in the book was most likely his photos. More of his photos can be seen in Barnard's A Hoosier Quaker Goes to War," Laid in is the publisher's original promotional for the book.
