* (illustrator). First Edition (& 1st printing). Small quarto, original light brown cloth over beveled boards, spine panel lettered in gilt. xvii + 72 pp, frontispiece plus 37 additional plates with printed tissue guards (17 are in colour); Glossary, Index. Aside from the photographic frontispiece, the plates were specially drawn for this edition by Ivy Abercrombie. A fine copy in the original cloth, in the original printed dust jacket (scuffed and worn, with some scratches and chips). Printed on fine paper in a lovely cloth binding, a rather luxurious book. A classic of British Columbia botany. The author inaugurated the Botanical Survey of British Columbia in 1911 on behalf of the Government of BC; over the years, many hundreds of participants submitted many thousands of specimens to the Survey. As a comprehensive work including illustrations of every species could only be issued at a prohibitive cost - which would defeat the aims of the Survey by permitting only the very wealthy to obtain copies, the present work was produced to supply part of this demand. That this was to be the first volume of a projected six-volume series is somewhat telling, as no other volumes were produced.
