Add to basketTaschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books. Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Friedrich Engels' seminal work, 'The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844,' presents a meticulous examination of the dire socioeconomic realities facing the laboring population during the Industrial Revolution. Written in a vivid and impassioned style, the text blends empirical observations with moral outrage, capturing the stark contrasts between wealth and poverty. Engels employs both personal anecdotes and sociological analysis, thereby contextualizing the plight of the working class within the broader frameworks of capitalism and industrialization. The 1892 preface serves as a reflective commentary that underscores the enduring relevance of his findings amidst the ongoing struggles of the proletariat. Engels, a close collaborator of Karl Marx, was deeply influenced by his experiences in industrial England, where he witnessed firsthand the exploitative conditions of workers. His upbringing in a bourgeois family, juxtaposed with his immersion in the labor movement, undoubtedly shaped his advocacy for socialism. Engels' insights were crucial in laying the groundwork for the later development of Marxist theory, as he sought to illuminate the systemic injustices suffered by the working class. This essential text is highly recommended for both scholars and general readers interested in the interplay of class, industrialization, and capitalism. It provides not only an invaluable historical account but also fosters a critical understanding of contemporary labor issues, making it a timeless contribution to social thought. 172 pp. Englisch.

Add to basketFull Description: ENGELS, Friedrich. The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. With Appendix Written 1886, and Preface 1887. Translated by Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky. London: William Reeves, 1888. First British edition, bound from the American sheets of the first edition in English which was published one year earlier, 1887, in New York. The sheets are the American first edition sheets, with a new title-page. The first edition printed in the UK did not appear for another four years. Octavo (7 1/4 x 4 7/8 inches; 185 x 123 mm. [4], vi, [3]-199, [1, note], ix, [ii, index], [1, blank] pp. Complete. Both this and the American edition are quite rare, and this present edition more so. We could find only one worn copy at auction from 2006. First published in Germany in 1848, Engels wrote an updated Appendix for the text in 1886 which appears in these sheets for the first time. In addition to this edition being translated by American social reformer Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky, at her request, Engels also provided a new preface in 1887 to go along with this English translation. This preface mostly includes information about the American working class. It starts "Ten months have elapsed since, at the translator's wish, I wrote the Appendix to this book; and during these ten months, a revolution has been accomplished in American society such as, in any other country, would have taken at least ten years." Publisher's full brown cloth with beveled edges. Spine lettered in gilt. Top edge gilt. Some very minor wear to spine extremities , board edges and corners. Some very mild wrinkling to cloth. Some light foxing and toning to endpapers and title-page. Title-page with a small abrasion, just touching one letter. Still an excellent copy. "Friedrich Engels was born in 1820 in Barmen, Germany. His father was a wealthy man with interests in a textile business in England. This fact as well as his association with Karl Marx would dominate his existence. The father wished the son to follow in his footsteps and so sent him to clerk for three years at the manufacturing town of Bremen. Because of this, Engels never really had a University Education. Yet even at this stage (about 20 years old) he was already becoming active in radical causes and writing pamphlets on philosophy and economics. Engels would meet Marx in 1842 in Cologne and their friendship would flower in Paris in 1844. Engels, who was a thinker in his own right, thought Marx the more original, and soon hitched his intellectual wagon to Marx's star. In the early 1840s he spent a few years in England working as a manager at one of his father's mills. It was this experience that produced his first prominent work, "The Condition of the Working Class in England" published in 1844 [in Germany]." (W.J. Rayment). Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky "was an American social reformer who contributed to the development of state and federal labour and social welfare legislation in the United States." Octavo, original cloth with gilt titles to the spine, beveling to the front and rear panel, top edge gilt. In very good condition, name to the title page. Translated by Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky. Uncommon with only one having appeared at auction in the last 80 years. "Born in Barmen, the eldest son of a textile manufacturer in Westphalia, Engels (1820 - 1895) was trained for a merchant's profession. In 1842, Engels left for England to work in his father's Manchester firm. Already converted by Moses Hess to a belief in 'communism' and the imminence of an English social revolution, he used his two-year stay to study the conditions which would bring it about. From this visit, came two works which were to make an important contribution to the formation of Marxian socialism: 'Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy' (generally called the 'Umrisse') published in 1844 and The Condition of the Working Class in England, published in Leipzig in 1845." (Jones, 159). The daughter of a Philadelphia judge, Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky "exerted an immediate and dramatic influence on the generation of women reformers clustered within the social settlement movement during the Progressive Era. Her understanding of the material basis of class conflict and her familiarity with American political institutions, combined with her spirited personality, placed her in the vanguard of a generation of reformers who sought to make American government more responsive to what they saw as the needs of working people" (ANB).

(4), (I)VI, (3)-199, (1), (I)IX, (I)II, (1) p. Extremely scarce, first English edition of Friedrich Engels' first book, Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, preceded the UK edition by a year. In his 1845 book, Engels' (18201895) reports on the horrible conditions of the working class in Victorian England, which he observed while living in Manchester, then at the heart of the industrial revolution, between 18421845. While giving a detailed description of the daily life of miners and agricultural workers in the new industrial towns, the book contains many of Engels' important and ground-breaking early thoughts on capitalism and socialism. His work was translated to English by the American social and political reformer, Florence Kelley (18591932) and was published first in the present edition, with Engels' preface, which brought the story up to date in the light of forty years' further reflection. . Spine slightly rubbed at the head and the tail. New endpapers. Mounted bookplate (Liebetrau) on front endpaper, embossed collection stamp on the title page and page IX. Add to basket8vo. (4), VI, (3)-199, (1), IX, II, (1) pp. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettered to the spine. Now housed in bespoke brown cloth case. First British edition of the first English translation. This British edition was almost certainly issued to tie in with the publication of the latest English translation of Engels and Marx's "Manifesto of the Communist Party", also published by Reeves in London in 1888. It was published using the sheets of the first US edition which appeared in New York the previous year; the first edition printed in the UK did not appear for another four years. Whilst the first New York edition is uncommon, this London edition is particularly scarce with scant few auction records and not many institutional holdings: Copac lists two in the UK, at the British Library and Oxford, with Worldcat listing three more, two in the US and one in the Netherlands. - A few blemishes to the contents, occasional old pencilled underlining and marginalia, sometime neatly recased with new endpapers, some light wear to the edges of the binding, but generally a decent copy. Provenance: formerly in the Midlands Workers' Library of Birmingham with their loan label to the second free endpaper (listing a single loan in March 1945) and the faint remains of a white numbered shelfmark to the spine; the library's highly distinctive and attractive pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown featuring illustrations of workers set amid Communist iconography. - Cf. MEGA IV.32: A copy of the U.S. edition (New York: Lovell, 1887) in Engels's library. Stammhammer I, 72, 9.
