Collected works of Flavius Josephus with Christian texts. Frontispiece, a copper plate engraving, depicting Josephus. Beneath is a handwritten owner's dedication of the time (dated 1864). Contains: 1) Life of Flavius Josephus 2) Antiquities of the Jews. 3) Wars of the Jews [vol. 3, 4] 4) Against Apion 5) Three Dissertations Text is in English. Ex-libris to inside of front board. Serious age wear and staining, with front board almost completely detached, but still attached on top. Water marks to frontispiece, title and first few pages. Serious browning throughout, with foxing. Overall in fair condition. Flavius Josephus a.k.a. Joseph b. Matityahu was a 1st century Jewish historian and soldier. During the 66-70 C.E. Jewish revolt against Rome, he was made commander of Galilee. He surrendered to the Romans rather then commit suicide. After the war, Josephus spent the last three decades of his life living in a villa outside of Rome under imperial patronage and writing his histories. He authored The Jewish War, The Antiquities of the Jews, Against Apion and an autobiography. Josephus' historical works are among the most valuable sources for the study of 1st century Judaism and the context for early Christianity. This is due, among other things to the fact that they are products of his firsthand experience and his peculiar position as a defender of Judaism and a supporter of Rome. While Josephus was ignored by Jewish tradition (the Talmud makes no mention of him), he was embraced by the Church. This was mainly because of the Testimonium Flavianum passage from the Antiquities Book 18, which refers to Jesus and even calls him the Messiah. (Whether or not this passage was all or in part added in by a Christian scribe is a matter of some debate among scholars.) Such Church Fathers as Origin, Jerome and Ambrose, as well as the early ecclesiastical historian Eusebius quote him in their work. Seller: Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Folio hardcover. Measures 10.5 x 16.5 inches. Bound in full leather now considerably scuffed and edgeworn, befitting a 200 year old American binding. Spine leather all but gone. Front cover detached but present. Frontispiece engraving detached but present. Title page detached as well, but set in place. Both of those pages have some chipping at the edges. The rest of the text block is tightly sewn, but in two sections -- pages 1-153 are in one block and 153 to 723 in another. Also at the rear are the instructions to the binder for the 60 plates & then 3 pages of Subscribers names (one of those pages is just Subscribers in Baltimore). All 60 plates are present and in the proper place. The folding map of Jerusalem has some tears and crinkles. Normal fading and foxing to pages and plates. All the plates say 'Engraved for the American edition.' This is the most extensively illustrated eighteenth century American book I can remember seeing. Text in double columns. Baltimore was never a publishing center in the United States. Books from Pechin's press are scarce - he published an edition of Jefferson's Notes on the state of Virginia in 1800. I cannot find anything published earlier than this volume - which would be a stupendous first effort by a young printer. Please email with questions or to request photos. This is a heavy book, so some extra shipping will be required.

Hardcover. Condition: g- to g+. Later edition. Elephant folio. VI, 7-723, [3]pp. Full tan morocco. Engraved frontispiece. Decorative tailpieces. Remarkable edition of the works of Flavius Josephus, providing crucial information about the First Jewish-Roman War and an important literary source material for understanding the context of the Dead Sea Scrolls and late Temple Judaism. In point of literary talent Josephus ranks among the leading writers in world literature. These works provide valuable insight into First century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity. This book is exquisitely illustrated with 2 full-page color-outlined maps, 1 large folding plan of Jerusalem, and 58 copper engravings after the foremost English artists, including Metz, Moreau, and Stothard (three of which were engraved by William Blake, facing pages 13, 65 and 76).
