This deluxe publication is printed on Holland paper and features many illustrations which appeared in early Fielding editions, with a hand-coloured plate, each signed by their various colourist. The introduction was contributed by W. E. Henley (1849-1903), th…e author of "Invictus", whose literary "editorship has become something of a legend" (ODNB). The limitation page to Volume I notes that this copy was bound for a Mr J. G. Ward. Ward's collection, "including library sets of noted authors, many in fine bindings" was auctioned in New York in 1924 after his death (Art News, p. 4). The Art News, vol. 22, no. 17, 2 February 1924. 16 vols, octavo. Frontispieces in two states, the second hand-coloured with colourist's signature in pencil, many further engraved plates after Cruikshank, Rowlandson, Corbould, and others, with captioned tissue guards printed in red, facsimile title page and manuscript letter to vol.
