Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. The Outward Bound Edition complete in 36 volumes. Various dates of publication from 1897 to 1937. Original publisher's 3/4 morocco with blue marbled boards. Spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs. Gilt text in compartments two & three. Top edges gilt. Edges are uncut. Marbled end-papers. Volumes 32- 33 an 34 have considerable wear on the boards with some areas completely worn off.The Outward Bound edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling?s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes. However variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling (2004) indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner's, preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. Each volume has a frontispiece with a tissue guard. Illustrative plates, portraits and maps throughout. This handsome set belonged to Richard Hugh Schaddelee, an accomplished yachtsman from Grand Rapids, Michigan. A copy of the February 4, 1957 Sports Illustrated with his picture on the cover is included. Also includes is a letter dated November 29, 1937 addressed to Mr. Schaddelee from Charles Scribner's Sons concerning the extremely scarce final three last volumes (34, 35 and 36) of this set. The Limited Printing notice from the Publisher is also included. A rare find! Due to size and weight (60 lbd.), additional shipping will be required.Full refund if not satisfied.

Two volumes of uncollected prose and much verse are collected here for the first time. First Edition Signed
The Sussex Edition, number 72 of 525 sets only, signed by the author in the first volume and containing two volumes of previously uncollected prose. Published after Kipling's death on 18 January 1936, this magnificent posthumous edition saw a small limitation and became even rarer following the destruction of many unsold sheets during the German bombing of London. In his last years, and with his health failing, Kipling remained determined to finish editing this "great retrospective work" which was first proposed in 1928. The edition was "fuller than that of any other. [Kipling] saw the proofs of at least 21 of the edition's 35 volumes before his death" and it is now "among the most prized and most expensive of all modern editions" (Pinney, p. 231). Richards D23; Stewart, pp. 577-80. Thomas Pinney, The Letters of Rudyard Kipling, vol. 6, 1990. 35 volumes, large octavo. Original full russet niger morocco by James Burn & Co., spines lettered in gilt, raised bands ruled in blind, twin gilt fillet bordering covers, turn-ins ruled in gilt and blind, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt and red on the rough, other edges uncut. Printed on handmade paper with Ganesha watermark. Fly-titles printed in orange. Bindings slightly darkened, occasional light scuffs and internal marks, otherwise clean. A near-fine set.
