Rebound in gilt-tooled Tuscancalfskin, spine with raised bands and gilt-lettered black leather label, with marbled and fresh endpapers with original front and rear free endpaper preserved, in a custom matching clamshell box; original green cloth-covered boards and backstrip with paper label preserved in a custom matching red cloth folder; all presented together in a green box. 4to; [i-iii], iv-v, [i], [1]-155, [1]pp. Complete with (18) mounted lithographed plates of portraits of race horses by Gauci and Chalon, numbered and lettered 1-10, G, and 11-17 with a description facing each plate. Unusual to this copy, the plates are beautifully hand-colored. Binding documentation enclosed, though lacking tissue gards.

A first edition of Broadhurst's study of the conditions of horses and cattle in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, especially in regard to the changes in techniques for their domestication. With eighteen finely rendered lithographs of both racing and show horses after the preeminent English horse painter George Stubbs. Not a proponent of the modern breeding and rearing practices for domesticated animals, particularly those for horses, Broadhurst examines the changes to cattle, racehorses, saddle horses, and the calvary from the eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century. His text is subdivided into separate investigations of each quadraped variety as they were differentiated by specific domestication practices designed to maximize each animal's potential benefit to humans. To illustrate his most significant section, "Racehorses," Broadhurst employs 17 lithograph plates by Maxim Gauci and Henry Bernard Chalon after George Stubbs, as well as Seymour, Marshall, and Coope. These beautiful horse prints provide visuals to discussion of animal husbandry practices and the changes in racehorses over the two centuries.
