Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This is the Temple Edition of William Shakespeare's play, "The Comedy of Errors". The book was edited, with a Preface, Glossary and Notes by Israel Gollancz, and published by J. M. Dent in London . This is the 7th Temple Edition, issued in August 1902. It is the shortest of Shakespeare's plays; according to "The Oxford Companion to English Literature", |> This is one of the earliest and crudest of his plays, and, in the main, is an adaptation of the 'Menaechmi' of Plautus.<| Nonetheless it is a rather madcap comedy of mistaken identities, and despite the overhanging threat of execution that hangs over one of the characters, playgoers found themselves chuckling at the staged absurdities. Audiences still find the story a comic farce, well worth the watching. It's a lovely, petite book, measuring approximately 4" x 5 3/8", bound in dark burgundy cloth with top edge gilt. The front cover has Shakespeare's family heraldic crest stamped in blind; the spine has the title in gilt. The fore- and bottom text-block edges are rough trimmed. Inside, the end-papers, front and back, have Shakespeare's heraldic crest printed in black and yellow. The half-title announces the series ("The Temple Shakespeare"). The frontispiece is a gravure reproduction in miniature of an old etching of the Grammar School at Stratford Upon Avon. This frontispiece is accompanied by a guard tissue, which has printed on it an elegy for the great Bard by Ben Johnson ("And though thou hadst small Latin and less Greek ?"). The decorated title page, which is rubricated (printed in red and black), features a central vignette of two smiling head, pointing each to the other. On the verso of the title page is Samuel Coleridge's appreciative assessment of Shakespeare's wit, which starts : "The myriad-minded man, our, and all men's, Shakspeare, has in this piece presented us with a legitimate farce in exactest consonance with the philosophical principles and character of farce as distinguished from comedy and from entertainments ?". The rest of the book is lightly rubricated throughout with the act and scene numbers rendered in red. The book is bound with a silk place-marker. The book is graced with several engraved illustrations, as well as decorative embellishments. This copy came from the personal library of Jospeh B. Cooke, and has his bookplate as well as his signature and dated inscription on the free end-paper opposite. This may have been the Joseph B. Cooke who was a doctor in Cooperstown, but I have not verified this. SERIES : Rolfe's Shakespeare TITLE : The Comedy of Errors AUTHOR : William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) EDITOR - INTRODUCTION - NOTES : William J. Simple line border in blind on front and rear boards. All text-block edges are dyed red. manilla colored end-papers. CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that has undergone some wear (there are small damp stains at edges - see below); the original owner's handsome bookplate is on the front paste-down, and the dated signature / inscription on the free end-paper, opposite. This in India ink, reading " Jos. B. Cooke /from/ Grandmother / Dec. 29 - 1883 . The following particulars are noted :: EXTERIOR -- Clean. The spine extremities are compressed and abraded, with fraying just starting; joints are rubbed. The surface of the boards, front and rear, are bright - the gilt lettering still being bright. Corner tips are softly bumped with attendant rub thereon. Text-block edges are still bright - and clean. BINDING -- Solid the leaves open widely - it is obvious that the book has been read, but no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR -- The book was exposed to some moisture long ago and displays a few small damp stains (with attendant tide lines) along the edges (hence the condition grade). These are small in area, and not so egregious, but, nonetheless are there, and have as well contributed a modest sort of ripple effect to the paper. All that being said - the binding and internal pages are quite clean and the interior even has a crisp quality. The book is more than serviceable, still being a pleasure to peruse. The engraved illustrations have not suffered, and display nicely. Other than the owner's inscription, there is no writing, no underlining or marginalia.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. In very aesthetical modern full morocco in a traditional Ottoman style. Unopened and untrimmed pages, covers (saved in modern binding) stained slightly, also extremities damaged. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 119 p. Hegira: 1304 = Gregorian: 1887. Extremely rare first Turkish edition of the comedy of errors by Shakespeare in book form. Since the middle of the 19th-century, Turkish literature has appealed to foreign sources, especially European and Anglo American culture, in order to meet modern Turkey's demands. Shakespeare played a significant role in inspiring and shaping modern Turkish theatre. Shakespearean plays made their official entrance into Turkey during the reform movement of Tanzimat (1839-76) that warmly welcomed translating works from other cultures. European, Greek and Armenian troupes of the Ottoman Empire, as well as travelling Italian troupes, were the pioneers of producing plays from other cultures, yet in their own languages. The Merchant of Venice (1885) and The Comedy of Errors (1886-7) were the earliest translations into Turkey by Hasan Sirri, which had the chance to be published in book form. First translations of Shakespeare's plays were made from French copies. However, Sehv-i mudhik (The Comedy of Errors) was one of the earliest translations directly from English language. The translator of this book, Örikagasizâde Hasan Sirri, (1861-1939) was an administrator and educator who grew up during the reign of Abdulhamid II and was in state service for almost forty years. He was the son of Turkish diwan poet Ahmet Nafiz Pasha and the father of author Nahid Sirri Örik. The Comedy of Errors which he translated by easing or removing prejudiced sentences and words about Turks, Islam and Jews, is of importance in terms of his clear Turkish and careful attention to detail. The Comedy of Errors was the second play of Shakespeare translated, and is one of William Shakespeare's early plays. It is his shortest and one of his most farcical comedies, with a major part of the humor coming from slapstick and mistaken identity, in addition to puns and wordplay. The Comedy of Errors is, along with The Tempest, one of only two Shakespearean plays to observe the Aristotelian principle of unity of time, through which the events of a play should cover a period of 24 hours. It has been adapted for opera, stage, screen and musical theatre numerous times worldwide. In the centuries following its premiere, the play's title has entered the popular English lexicon as an idiom for "an event or series of events made ridiculous by the number of errors that were made throughout".
