Add to basketMass market paperback. Condition: Good. Alan McKnight (Maps) and Greg Beecham and Tom Beec (illustrator). First Bantam Edition Printing [stated]. xv, [1], 377, [7] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Tabular information. Maps. Bibliography. Index. Preface by Admiral William Halsey. Some page discoloration. Stamps inside front cover and on first page. Frederick Carl Sherman (May 27, 1888 - July 27, 1957) was a highly decorated admiral of the United States Navy during World War II. He commanded USS Lexington (CV-2) from 1940 until her loss in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Sherman was a three-time recipient of the Navy Cross. Promoted to vice admiral in 1945, he became Commander, United States Fifth Fleet before retiring in 1947. Upon retirement, he was promoted to admiral on the retired list. Sherman wrote Combat Command, a history of the Pacific Theater of World War II, drawing on his personal experiences. Combat Command was published in 1950 by E.P. Dutton Inc, and again by Bantam Books in 1982. A shattered Navy desperately struggles for supremacy of the biggest battlefield of World War II--the Pacific Ocean. Death in the air and blood in the water, that was the war in the Pacific. "Combat Command" covers the entire epic story of the Pacific Campaign: the savage sea battles, the grand strategies, the tragic blunders, and the tremendous sacrifices and individual heroism of our men at war.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Illustrated with Photographs and Maps. 26 Illustrations, 9 Maps including the one on the end papers. You can see the covers in the photos. There is some color fade off the top and bottom edges of the spine. The gilt on some of the letters on the spine is partly faded away. There is a thin crease just off the bottom edge of the spine. There is a bump/crease above the front bottom corner, a tiny one below the two top corners. The top and middle cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing. Each cover's bottom edge has a tiny spot with a little bit of fraying. The covers corners have only a little bit of crinkling and are in very good shape. The rear bottom one has a speck-sized spot of rub-through. The page edges look quite clean. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. I haven't seen any tears on any of the edges. The book is solidly bound. I didn't see any cracks or spaces at the junctures between any facing pages, nor at the junctures between the mapped inside covers and their end papers. The covers are tightly bound. The outer edge of the inside covers, both front and rear has some small losses (this is not part of the map). The losses give the edges a jagged appearance. The interior of the book is in very nice shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I haven't found any conspicuous soiling. I saw just a few very light tan spots of foxing. The pages are fairly bright which is nice. A minority of pages have a light, small crease off their bottom corners, far from the print. And I saw just a few very thin placeholder creases below a top corner. The illustrations and maps appear to all be in very good condition. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere.
