Noel Carrington (1895-1989) was an English book designer, editor, and the founder of Puffin Books. He was the author of several works on design and recreation, and served on the Council of Industrial Design and the Design and Industries Association. In the present work, Carrington provides a companion work to his earlier publication Design and Decoration in the Home (1952), which gave insights into post-war style. With a slackening of restrictions and a flow of new materials, Carrington intended to illustrate both the possibilities inherent in various colour combinations and the pattern of modern room arrangement . Offering practical advice, the examples are illustrated by Roland Collins, and show real homes and settings incorporating designs by manufacturers and designers such as Liberty, Heals, Lucienne Day and Edward Barnsley. Robin de Beaumont was the former President of The Private Libraries Association, and a leading expert in Victorian decorative bindings. His extensive library was described by one visitor as "The closest one could get to looking through the window of Hatchard's in the 1860s", and was awarded an MBE in 2009 for services to bibliography. His collection was sold in three parts, the final sale through Bonhams in 2024, with standout items in the collection including examples of early auto-lithography and Chivers bindings. Seldom found in the wrapper and in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
