Houghton, Jr., to house the rare book and manuscript collections of HARVARD UNIVERSITY, was opened in 1942 with William A. Jackson as its first Librarian. The oldest of the North American universities, Harvard has long had a great library, and an active collecting policy has made its German, and particulary its modern Austrian, literature collections outstanding. Special strength was added by the acquisition, shortly after the end of the war, of the literary remains of HUGO VON HOF-MANNSTHAL, which had been removed from Austria in 1938 to a safe haven on the other side of the Atlantic. At about the same time Houghton Library also acquired the collection of printed Hof mannsthal material that had been formed by KARL JACOBY in Berlin and that had also been rescued from war-torn Europe. This work describes for the first time the Hofmannsthal collection in the Department of Printed Books at the Houghton Library. While not a bibliography in the fullest sense, since it is restricted to the description of this one collection that is not absolutely complete, this book nevertheless constitutes the most bibliographically detailed catalogue of Hofmannsthal's works in all forms (books, periodicals, newspapers), besides from the full-scale bibliography by Horst Weber, that has yet appeared."
