Price clipped. When Richard Coeur de Lion captured 15 enemy knights in 1198, he blinded all but one. The latter was spared an eye in order to lead his companions back to the French army, which was considered an act of clemancy at the time. By 1758 under the Elightemnet, the French thinker Vattel declared that once a man surrendered, his life was sacrosantct, and the treatment of prisoners at the hands of the French and English armies at this time was examplary. But in the 1940s the terrible stories filtering out of the German and Japanese camps suggested that the wheel had come full circle. Every age and every culture has had its prisoners of war and its own code of conduct toward them, and this fact makes this book a study of unique interest. Recounting the personal histories of POW from many times and cultures, it is provocative, anecdotal and often disquieting. The book is the fruit of much patient research and its fresh approach sheds new light on a shadowy area of military history. Illustrated. 192 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Colditz was the last stop for prisoners of war in the Second World War. It was to this impregnable fortress that the Germans sent all those prisoners who persisted in escaping from other camps, such as Stalag Luft III (of THE GREAT ESCAPE FAME). Once within the walls of Colditz, the Germans reasoned, escape was impossible. And yet during the four-year period when the castle was used as a prison over 300 men escaped, 31 of whom managed to complete the hazardous journey home through Germany. Prisoners from 10 different countries formed a truly international escape academy. Skeleton keys were made, German passes forged, maps drafted, and all manner of tools and machinery constructed out of whatever the prisoners had to hand. The ingenuity of the escape artists knew no bounds: the tried everything from tunnelling, to hiding in rubbish sacks, disguising themselves as German officers, and leaping acrobatically from the castle walls. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
