Jacket is soiled, edges are tattered, green cloth boards are lightly soiled, spine ends are worn, binding sound, pages lightly age-toned. Lipman's seminal 1947 book by renowned journalist Walter Lippmann, offered a critique of the emerging "containment" strategy against the Soviet Union, challenging George Kennan's "X Article" and advocating for a more flexible, negotiated foreign policy rather than ideological confrontation in the nascent Cold War era. Lippmann argued against the broad, inflexible containment of Soviet influence, suggesting it could lead to overextension and perpetual conflict, instead proposing direct engagement and a focus on European stability.

First edition, first printing of this seminal collection of essays by Walter Lippmann in a unclipped dust jacket showing the original price of $1.00. The book (sans jacket) itself is in good condition. Some lineal foxing at the back pastedown towards the spine. Foxing at the top of the text block. This copy of The Cold War is original. There is a 2.5-inch tear on the edge of the dust jacket. Note that there is a 1.5-inch x .75-inch scrape on the dust jacket's back cover, thereby eliminating the full blurb text. Pages are lightly toned. Several pages show foxing near the spine and top. There is no writing, such as a previous owner's name, no bookplates, no highlighting. The hunter-green cloth boards are in very good condition with nary a flaw. Comments: Although George Orwell first coined the term "The Cold War" in his essay "You and the Atom Bomb," it was financier Bernard Baruch who first used it publicly in a speech in 1947. The idiom was then further popularized by journalist Walter Lippmann, when his book "The Cold War" was first published by Harper & Brothers.
