This unnumbered boxed set is one of 500 double suites of 12 color, mounted plates - 24 plates total - one set of 12 is mounted on a dark green matte paper and is suitable for framing, and also contains an octavo-size booklet which holds an introductory essay. It all co…mes in a cloth-bound, clam-shell box. These illustrations are from the Codex Vindobonensis Medicus Graecus 1 at the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Condition: the spine ends of the box are rubbed through with minor fraying; a one-inch area of the front outer hinge of the box is rubbed through; the front panel of the box shows fading and some soiling and the paper label is toned; internally the plates and introductory material are in fine condition. Overall, near fine.

El texto del griego Dioscórides de Anazarba fue un gran instrumento para los médicos a lo largo de toda la Edad media y por ello mereció un gran número de ediciones. La presente es especialmente valiosa por la gran personalidad de su traductor, el médico e investigador segoviano Andrés Laguna, de cuya vida se dan notícias en la interesante introducción. Zu den wertvollsten Handschriften in der Sammlung der Österreichischen Natio nalbibliothek gehört der Codex Vindobonensis med. gr. 1", besser bekannt unter der Kurzbezeichnung Wiener Dioskurides". Der imposante Band, nach seiner ersten Eigentümerin auch Anicia-Juliana-Codex" genannt, entstand im frühen 6…. Jahrhundert und vermittelt in Wort und Bild einen Eindruck von spätantiker Pflanzenkunde unter besonderer Berücksichtigung jener Teilgebiete der Botanik, die für den Arzt belangvoll waren. Es handelt sich somit eigentlich eher um ein drogenkundliches Werk, dessen Hauptteil ein in Deckfarben gemaltes Bild Herbarium einnimmt. Die Wiener Dioskurideshandschrift ist die älteste ihrer Art, eine frühe Abschrift des verschollenen Originals: ein erstaunlich gut konserviertes und fast komplettes Buch aus 491 Pergamentblättern im Format von etwa 36 x 30 cm. Zu den Pflanzenbildern kommen mythologische und allegorische Sze nen auf den ersten Seiten sowie kleinere Tier- und Pflanzenbilder in den letzten Abschnitten. Der Hauptteil des Codex besteht aus dem eigentlichen Dioskurides-Text" (fol. 12 verso bis 387 recto), aus einem drogenkundlichen Werk, dessen griechischer Titel Tlegi üng larons" lateinisch einfach mit De materia medica" übertragen wird. Der namensgebende Autor ist Pedanios Dioskurides aus der kilikischen Stadt Anazarba, der nach Urteil der meisten Medizinhistoriker zur Zeit des Kaisers Nero in Rom tätig war und seine Sammlung um 60 n. Chr. kodifizierte. Obwohl von einer systematischen Ordnung im modern-wissenschaftlichen Sinne in dieser Epoche naturgemäß noch keine Rede sein kann, enthält das Dioskurides-Herbar doch bereits Ordnungsprinzipien, die sich in der Gliederung in fünf Teile widerspiegeln. Der erste befaßt sich mit Gewürzen, Ölen, Salben und Bäumen sowie mit deren. Säften, Harzen und Früchten, der zweite mit Tieren und Tierprodukten (dazu gehören etwa Milch, Honig, Fett) sowie mit Gartenkräutern und Getreidearten. Der dritte und der vierte Teil behandeln Kräuter und Wurzeln sowie deren Pro dukte, der fünfte Getränke (Weinsorten) und Mineralien. Dieser Versuch einer Systematisierung wurde in jüngeren Handschriften dieser Art zum Teil beibehalten. Andere Fassungen des Stoffes hingegen stellen eine alphabetische Ordnung in den Vordergrund. Das alphabetische Ordnungsprinzip der Wiener Handschrift wird als -recensio Vindobonensis" bezeichnet und ergab sich aus der Vereinigung des noch zu erwähnenden Krateuas-Bildherbars" mit dem Dioskurides-Text und an deren drogenkundlichen Schriften. Five hundred double suites have been placed in boxed portfolios, covered in cloth, and numbered in Roman numerals I-D. Twenty-three hundred single suites have been placed in boxed portfolios, covered in ,Elephant Hide" paper. They have been numbered in Arabic numerals 1-2300.
