Ce petit ouvrage de Morelly (1717-1778), parut dans l'anonymat. Il fut à l'époque très décrié dans les gazettes, car il s'attaquait à l'institution chrétienne, garante de l'ordre moral. Le marquis d'Argenson le considéra cependant comme "le livre des livres ", et Baboeuf en 1796, considéra son auteur comme le maître du communisme. Morelly présente un communisme littéraire, poétique et moral. Et il est vraisemblable que Rousseau s'en inspira pour son "Contrat social". Cette utopie, élaborée sur un idéal de fraternité, propose l'abolition de la propriété privée, et se termine par un plan de législation idéale destiné à assurer le bonheur du genre humain. Ce petit ouvrage mal compris, et peu lu à sa parution, n'en demeure pas moins un des textes qui inspirèrent le socialisme et le communisme.
