Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). Small 4to. 88pp. Blue cloth lettered in dark blue at the spine and upper board. With ten monochrome plates by Pauline Baynes - her first substantial book illustrations (she would of course go on to illustrate books by C.S.Lewis…and J.R.R.Tolkien). A touch of bruising to the backstrip ends, and a small area of slight discolouration to the base of the backstrip where the dust wrapper is defective. Slight snagging to the two final text leaves where they have been very slightly mis-cut. The first plate has been very competently coloured by a former owner, and two further plates have also been partly coloured. A small area of loss to the lower edge of one text leaf (impacting no text), and that same leaf (only) sees a little coloured highlighting of small elements of the text. Nevertheless, this remains a lovely crisp copy in price-clipped dust wrapper, chipped with several inches of loss from the lower edge, and several smaller areas of edge-loss, and a little staining and soiling and several short tears. The book describes the adventures of two girls who encounter assorted historical figures including Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Fry, Sarah Siddons, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Florence Nightingale, Boadicea, &c.

FIRST EDITION, 10 monochrome plates with illustrations by Pauline Baynes, one or two faint spots, pp. 88, 4to, original light blue cloth, lettered to upper board and backstrip in a darker shade, juvenile ownership inscription to flyleaf, endpapers lightly spotted, very good. The book accompanies two girls as they encounter vario…us historical figures - Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Fry, Elizabeth Barratt Browning, Florence Nightingale, Boadicea, Queen Victoria, et al. - in the company of a host of fairies. It features early work by Pauline Baynes, the later illustrator of Lewis and Tolkien, then undertaking wartime work at the Admiralty in Bath and gathering a few early commissions - this is her first for Country Life and her first substantial book illustration, following some work on the Perry Colour Books in the previous couple of years. It is evidently early work, less assured in its composition, and with aspects of influence more apparent, but with plenty of touches characteristic of her accomplished later work.
