Trade Paperback. Condition: As New. 1st Prtg. 1st printing, thus. A fine, unread copy of the trade paperback. The first mystery by one of the most acclaimed mystery writers of our time. The Close at Melchester Cathedral was normally a quiet place where canons, vicars, vergers, and others involved in running the great cathedral lived in tranquility, until somebody among them started waging a hate campaign against the white-haired senior verger. This troubled the Dean greatly, so much so that he invited his favorite nephew down from Scotland Yard for an unofficial visit. And what young Sergeant Pollock found was so disturbing that he was obliged to call in his superior officer, ChiefInspector Hazlerigg, a thick, square man whose deceptively sanguine exterior conceals a first-rate intellect. But even his presence is not enough to stop the murderer in their midst from canying out a very deadly plan. Published in 1947, ten years after it takes place, "Close Quarters" is the first novel from this acclaimed writer, who went on to win grandmaster and lifetime achievement awards from mystery associations in England, the U.S., France, and Sweden. Book.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Octavo with yellow boards in blue pictorial jacket; 251 pages; illustrations; 21 cm. Seems like aquite a fun read! "Close Quarters belongs to a class of mystery novel which, alas, is becoming to increasingly rare: the traditional detective story. It is a murder problem placed in a special, closed and intrinsically interesting setting--in this case, the ingrown community of a Cathedral Close. It is filled with riddles, mystifications and deceptions, yet it never departs from the rules of fair-play evidence. From poison-pen letters to clues embdedded in crossword puzzles, it employs a whole conjuror's bag of tricks expressly designed to baffle and fascinate the reader." --Jacket copy. A very good copy; unmarked pages and tight binding; occasional very faint foxing spots; boards show light rubbing to edges and bumping to corners; in very good (-) jacket with edgewear and several small chips; now in archival mylar.…

Condition: Good. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered scarlet back and front. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. Close Quarters is the author's first novel, published in England by Hodder and Stoughton in 1947, it did not appear in the United States until 1963. By then Gilbert's reputation had been firmly established in both countries and his regular American publisher for many years had been Harper & Brothers. Close Quarters, however, was published by Walker and Company, a less prestigious house. In it we are introduced to Chief Inspector Hazlerigg, who will go on to be a recurring character in a number of Gilbert's works throughout the next ten years. Written while he was a schoolmaster at Salisbury. He now considers the tale cluttered, but the plan showing who was where in the close of Melchester Cathedral on the critical evening makes clear the theories of the official and unofficial detectives: Chief Inspector Hazlerigg and the dean's nephew. Gilbert, who was appointed CBE in 1980, was a founder-member of the British Crime Writers' Association. Contains frontispiece Cathedral floor plan and a variant of which repeated to the text, and three crossword grids, 252 pp. From the private library and estate of Frank Williams. Text block edges browned, with light soing to the cloth covers and in Good condition, no dust wrapper. Member of the P.B.F.A. DETECTIVE | CRIME FICTION.…
