Romain Rolland, né le 29 janvier 1866 à Clamecy (Nièvre) et mort le 30 décembre 1944 à Vézelay, est un écrivain français pacifiste, lauréat du prix Nobel de littérature en 1915, connu pour son engagement intellectuel durant l'entre-deux-guerres. Ce journal, rédigé lorsqu'il était étudiant à l'École Normale entre 1886 et 1889, témoigne de sa soif de vérité et de son besoin de morale dans les premières années de sa vie artistique. L'ouvrage inclut également des lettres à sa mère et le texte Credo Quia Verum, illustrant l'évolution de sa pensée avant la rédaction de son roman-cycle majeur Jean-Christophe. Publié par Albin Michel en 1952 avec un avant-propos d'André George, ce cahier du quatrième de la revue 29 offre une perspective intime sur la formation intellectuelle d'un auteur qui a marqué la conscience européenne de son époque.
