His life has been lived against the background of historical events such as the Partition of India, the creation of Pakistan, and the civil war which led to the emergence of Bangladesh. But he has also experienced cultural and religious changes, such as everyday racism in the UK of the 1960s and 70s, the growth of the Muslim community in Britain, and the evolution of the NHS towards the multicultural institution it has now become. His memoir is full of vivid detail, told honestly and without self-pity, and using diaries which he has kept for the last 60 years. Although the "fall from the top of the tree tree" was a life-shattering experience, Dr Wajed has turned it into a moving, honest and human story.
