Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. Polybius' Histories is one of classical antiquity's great political narratives. Written in 40 books (of which only the first five are preserved in full), it originally set out to explain the dramatic rise of Rome in the half century from the war against Hannibal to the defeat and abolishment of the Macedonian kingdom in 167 BC. At a later stage, Polybius extended his coverage down to the Roman destruction of Carthage and Corinth in the year 146 BC. Although written in an ordinary Greek style, the work was composed with great care, clarity and skill, and provides a fascinating discourse on the politics of power. The author was himself a leading Greek politician and general who moved at ease among the most powerful men of the day and participated in many of the events that he describes. This volume provides an accessible introduction to this important work of classical literature. Beginning with an outline of its contents and organization, Brian McGing goes on to examine Polybius' theoretical approach to writing history and the careful artistry behind his work. Later chapters discuss Polybius' eventful life and how it affected his views on history and politics, and analyze the influential theorizing of book six of the Histories. In an epilogue, McGing chronicles the fate of Polybius' work after his death, from classical antiquity to the Renaissance to the American Revolution and up to the present. The volume includes detailed maps and a list of prominent persons. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

He thanks him for his 'interesting paper', commenting on the 'Lucretian passage'. Postgate's 're-arrangement [.] is undoubtedly more attractive & logical than the ordinary arrangment, and as such I welcome it: but must we suppose always that artists do as well instinctively as they might if they had taken counsel?' 'Ex silentio I judge that all is well with you, as far as anything can be well for any of us these terrible times. We are but a fraction of our former self here in T. C. D.'.

Humphry objects that 'It is not desirable that the Undergraduates at so early a period of their career, should be invited to compete together for a great prize.' He also feels that 'the Examination will actually attract many Candidates, and so will extensively unsettle the Freshmen in their first Term; will prevent them from attending quietly to the College Lectures, and will take them away from the Lecture Room entirely, during one week of the Term'. Together with a photocopy of the entry explaining the circumstances from Joseph Romilly's diary for 21 October 1846, and a photocopy of a Humphry ALS.

Add to basketArthur Sidgwick's long entry in the Oxford DNB concludes with the following assessment: 'a university liberal of rare consistency and stamina: a progressive bridging Victorian and Edwardian generations, and pre-eminent among the male dons who made a place for women's higher education in Oxford'. At the time of the present letter he was nearing the end of a 'brilliant' undergraduate career at Cambridge, with the winning of many prizes: 'In 1863 he was second in the first class of the classical tripos and fourteenth senior optime in mathematics, and was also president of the union. He was a scholar of Trinity (18614) and later a fellow (18649).' The recipient was the widow of Rev. Sir Thomas Gery Cullum (1777-1855). She was a notable hostess, and her residence Hardwick House was famed for its garden. 2pp, 12mo. Mourning border. In good condition, lightly aged, with mourning border. Folded twice. A charming and good-natured letter, written after a visit to Hardwick House, which he had evidently left without saying goodbye. The letter begins: 'My dear Lady Cullum | All the way to Cambridge my memory dwelt with pleasure on the bright images which flitted before me at Hardwick'. He refers to her 'most enchanting house & grounds', before continuing: '& this morning I saw, when I rose before the sun, the Knot in my handkerchief. [last four words underlined] But I sometimes can remember without such external help. Let me not boast! I am too great a sinner for that; but surely I may tell truth, when truth tells on my side'. He explains that he has 'written to the Norwich photographer who did my face', ordering him 'to send to Lady Cullum two carte de visite photographs of my fair & youthful countenance. This he will do, I trust, before long: but his movements are none of the quickest - I am a very easy riser, because I am a bad sleeper. I was up, this sweet may morning at five -' He ends by quoting four lines from 'Chaucer's delicious description of a May morning in his Palamon & Arcite', and asks: 'Are not these very sweet lines & full of charming images? Evidently written by a man who loved the dear face of Nature'.
