Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition (xxxi, 480) with two engraved plates (System of Botany, Elevation of Greenhouse). Octavo, in modern brown three-quarter leather over marbled paper covered boards, five raised bands, gilt lettering and titles to spine, matching endpapers. The breathless title relieves me of the responsibility of summarizing the contents of this scarce book by a 'Nusery-man of Glocester'; Fussell (More, 68) makes passing reference, noting the nursery, at least, did well enough and was still being carried on by a daughter into the 1820's. A handsome modern binding and a clean text. A very nice copy indeed of a scarce work.

Add to basketVOLUME III ONLY of a three volume set. Paged as [2], 401-549, [1-102] plus unpaged b/w plates (pagination in succession to preceding volumes). Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 14.75cm. Contemporary full calf leather; some staining and rubbing to boards with light scuffing at edges and light bumping to corners; slender scuffing along joints and at spine ends; spine decorated with four fractionally raised bands although lacking title label but scuffed black "Vol. 3" label still present. Mild foxing to endpapers; occasional light foxing to interior leaves; old two-line black ink stamp "Patapsco Library. | Ellicott's Mills." near tops of title leaf and page 401 with slight associated smudging onto opposing versos; interior pages are otherwise fairly clean. Binding is firm. Still an attractive antiquarian copy. Book's plates are all b/w with none being hand-colored. Rear unpaged leaves feature "A Dictionary of Botanical Terms," a cumulative "General Index," and, upon the final page, an "Errata" and "Directions to the Binder." The Patapsco River settlement Ellicott's Mills was the forerunner to Ellicott City, Maryland; the fairly unobtrusive presence of the aforementioned stamp would seem indicative of a personal library (one of the Ellicott brothers perhaps?? as they had commercial interest in local agriculture and thus a botanical reference would be a logical possession) rather than an institutional one; book was obtained from a Tuscaloosa, Alabama estate with no further provenance known. A significant early 19th century botanical work by English draughtsman Richard Duppa (1770-1831) building upon the binomial nomenclature system and taxonomic work of Swedish botanist and zoologist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778).
