Comb binding. Condition: Very good. v, [1], 138, [2] pages. Title Index. Index. Illustrated cover. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Bookplate of previous owner inside the front cover. This is a reprint of the 1961 edition published by the Map Division and Reference Department of the Library of Congress. Preface to the First Edition. Preface [to the reprint edition] by Sterling E. Springston. Richard W. Stephenson became Head, Reference and Bibliography Section of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress. He was a founding member of the Philip Lee Phillips Map Society, and served 45 years at the Library of Congress. This bibliography begins with maps of the United States or large portions thereof, arranged by the dates of their content, and subdivided by authority. State maps follow, with maps of specific battles, towns, and natural features listed alphabetically under each State. The vast majority of maps herein described were prepared by the Federal armed forces or by commercials firms in the North: bit there are also some by Confederate authorities. Most of the entries include a brief paragraph describing the contents of the map. A general index records battles, areas, subjects, cartographers, surveyors, engravers, lithographers, and publishers. The numbers following the entries refer to the titles and not to pages. The Geography and Map Division (G&M) of the Library of Congress provides cartographic and geographic information for all parts of the world: to Congress, federal agencies, state and local governments, the scholarly community, and the general public. Experienced staff of reference librarians, senior specialists, and technicians link researchers to the largest and most comprehensive cartographic collection in the world. The G&M staff provide onsite reference and scanning services in the map and atlas reading room, support geospatial inquiries from Congress, and provide online answers to offsite reference questions. Reprint edition. Presumed first printing thus.
