First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First paperback edition. Photographically illustrated paper wrappers. Drawings and design by Emil Antonucci. Cover photograph by Charles Harbutt. A bit of spotting on the first few pages with offsetting on the interior front cover (from something once laid in), light foxing on page edges, very good. The first true hardcover first edition was limited to 500 numbered and signed copies. Lax's first and most famous book, a meditation on the Creation, was described in the *New York Times* as "perhaps the greatest English language poem of this century." A close friend of Thomas Merton's, their correspondence was published. Occasionally described as a hermit, Lax did little to advance his literary career. His sparing use of words qualifies him as one of the founders of literary minimalism.
