This edition is limited to one thousand copies, (this copy being unnumbered); gilt vignette (Marlene Dietrich) front cover; red end-papers; illustrated in black and white. To the front is an introduction & a brief biography of the artist (by Nicholas Bromley). Sherriffs attended Edinburgh College of Art where he initially studied heraldic design in addition to fine art. Influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and Alphonse Mucha, he later recalled that his three years at art school Â"confirmed my previous conviction that figures and faces were patterns to be studied and memorised - not patiently drawn from life". His first published caricature, of actor John Barrymore in the Bystander, was spotted by Beverley Nichols, who asked him to illustrate the 'Woad' series of celebrity profiles that he wrote in the Sketch. Sheriffs went on to produce regular full-page theatre and film drawings for the magazine. From 1927, he contributed drawings to the Radio Times. He illustrated a number of books, beginning in 1930 with Christopher Marlowe's The Life and Death of Tamburlaine the Great. He also worked as film caricaturist on Punch from 1948 until his death in 1960. Limited Edition. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. unpaginated. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact.
