Cloth. Condition: Good Only. None Stated (illustrator). First edition. A very scarce 1825 Parisian anthology reviving Clément Marot and his poetic peers from the 12th to 16th centuries. Smartly bound in red cloth with decorative blind-stamped patterns. This copy features a frontispiece engraving of Clément Marot. This 1825 Paris edition, published by Werdet, is a first thus, the first appearance of this particular anthology, bringing together a selection of poems by Clément Marot (14961544), a leading voice of the French Renaissance and court poet to Francis I.Born in Cahors and later active in Paris, Marot was deeply influenced by Renaissance humanism and his father, poet Jean Marot. Renowned for his elegant épîtres, chansons, and epigrams, he helped shape the poetic sensibility that would inspire Ronsard and the Pléiade. In addition to Marot"s work, the volume includes selections from his poetic predecessors (devanciers), spanning the 12th to 16th centuries, among them troubadours, trouvères, and poets of the grands rhétoriqueurs tradition, offering a broader view of the evolution of French verse leading into the Renaissance. Rebound in red cloth. Externally, smart. Rubbing to boards, spine and extremities, resulting in slight loss to cloth at spine's extremities. Spine faded. Joints slightly cracked, with one small closed tear to head of spine. One or two handling marks to boards. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper, with the odd spot. Internally, generally firmly bound, though the first few leaves are loosely bound with binding materials visible; pages 439 are partially detached from the upper sewing thread. Otherwise, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, if age toned. With age toning and one or two spots to perimeters. Good Only. book.
