George MacBeth's childhood, like that of so many of his generation, was brutally altered by the outbreak of the Second World War. Born in Scotland, where his father worked as…a miner, and raised in Sheffield, his early fascination with guns and battle was soon replaced by the smell of fear and the terrifying sound of air-raid sirens. In December 1940 a bomb shattered the family home that had been the young MacBeth's core of safety in a menacing world. In October of 1941 his father walked out into an air raid, never to return. MacBeth was just nine years old. He and his mother "soldiered on", through VE Day and continued rationing. The author vividly recounts the tragic and comic events of his childhood and adolescence; the treacherous experience of puberty and his emerging sexuality, his fledgling experiments in politics and business, and the curtailment of his athletic career by illness. The memoir closes in 1951 when, as the young writer prepares to take up a scholarship at Oxford, he is confronted by his mother's death from cirrhosis of the liver. This intimate record of a childhood scarred by grief is both candid and a fitting tribute to those who gave him life.
