The Child Manuela, based on its author's experiences at the strict boarding school Kaiserin-Augusta-Stift in Potsdam, was originally published in German in 1934. The story revolves around a group of teenage girls in a strict Prussian boarding school, and the relationship one particular student develops with her teacher. Dealing frankly with the subject of homosexuality among teenage girls, it was also made into a hit play and an important film, the first to depict lesbianism positively.
