Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Adrian Bell (1901-1980) was born in Lancashire and grew up in London but wished for a life in the open air. In 1920 he apprenticed himself to a West Suffolk farmer, an experience that would inspire him to farm on his own. His celebrated trilogy Corduroy (1930), Silver Ley (1931) and The Cherry Tree (1932) grew out of that same raw material. The Cherry Tree (1932) finds Bell back at the helm of the Silver Ley farm whose running he took over in the second panel of the trilogy. The farming business remains in a parlous state beset by high costs, and Bell is forced to scale back his ambitions for crop-growing while continuing to breed cattle and horses. But perhaps the greatest upheaval the book describes is the tale of how he 'wearied of solitude and married a wife.'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Pencil inscription to rear free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Marking to rear board.

Condition: Good. 1941. Reprinted. 240 pages. No dust jacket. Orange cloth covered boards. Ex libris plate at front. Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some moderate sunning and tanning.

The dustwrapper is heavily rubbed with discolouring, large rip to spine, has some wear to the edges and corners, with some rips and chips to the edges. The red boards are rubbed with some fading, with mild bumping to the edges and clear black lettering to the spine. Tanning and foxing to page edges, name penciled to inside front cover. The binding is firm. The pages appear clean with some tanning and foxing throughout. This book has 240 pages. All in all a nice example of this book.

In The Cherry Tree the author describes further farming experiences, his marriage, and becoming habituated to country life. In both cases there is a little wear to the edges, corners and extremities of spine. No previous owner's name. 25 beautiful illustrations by Becker, in both black and white and colour, in both volumes. The bindings remain tight.
