Softbound. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Offprint from Monumenta Serica, Vol. XXX, No. 1, 1972-1973. In this paper, Barnard, a renowned authority on ancient Chinese bronze casting, discusses a ritual grain container held in the Auckland Institute and Museum, reported to have been once in the collection of the prominent Qing sc…holar Ruan Yuan. The fu-tray was ostensibly a product of the Eastern Zhou period, but Barnard quickly identified it as a forgery, a conclusion further strengthened by his later discovery of two more identical objects in the Freer Gallery collection. Employing analyses of inscriptions on the object, its method of construction, its metallurgical composition, iconography and décor, Barnard takes the reader through a rigorous proof of its spurious origin. 87 pp., 12 monochrome photographic plates, 12 b&w figs. Size: 26 x 18 cm.
