First Edition
Original, rare, first edition, hardcover in jacket, 255 pages, exceptional photographs throughout with many montages toward end of book; and some in style of solarization (Man Ray like) and then deep contrast and beautiful use of shadows in others. Rare book, for its age the binding is solid and there is ordinary age-toning to the pages. Attractive cloth binding with gilt along spine; scratch across front boards; some overall fading, mild rubbing and wear to boards but actually quite decent. Mild to average reference wear with previous owner tiny stamp on inside front cover edge. Jacket is attractive in protective mylar sleeve; a few small chips, tears mainly at corners and near spine, along edges; light rubbing along spine edges. The rear jacket has some general soiling, age-toning, and rubbing; age-toning, light soiling along spine. Very good for age. gc2.

First Edition
London/ Colombo, Lincolns-Prager Publishers Limited, 1950, 1st ed., 255 pag., 120 photogravure plates by Lionel Wendt, original giltlettered cloth with dustjacket, quarto (27,8 x 20,4 cm.). = Parr/ Badger The Photobook II, p.98: "Lionel Wendt's Ceylon is typical of his photographic style-pictorialist-modernist in the English mode -- and illustrates a clash of two cultures, with Wendt looking at his own culture almost like an outsider. Ostensibly a book of personal travel photographs, the usual tropes of the genre are here -- lush landscapes, architectural and people studies -- all heavily idealized. But there are also a fair number of nude studies, of both males and females. These are typically pictorialist in style, with some Surrealist photomontages thrown in to show that Wendt was thoroughly up-to-date". Dustjacket not price-clipped; worn along edges; lacking portions at spine-ends and a narrow strip at upper left corner front-panel; large tear at top of upper joint and spine dampstained. Inscribed on first free endpaper.
