Add to basketBruxelles, Alex. Jamar, Éditeur - libraire, 1845. Fomat in-8°, (25,5 x 17 cm), 354 pp + (6) nn pp (index), with 7 chromolithographies and 17 full page wood-engravings and many smaller illustrations in the text. Bound in contemporary black half morocco, Raised and gilt decorated spine, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Nothwiths…tanding a few sparse small foxing spots at only a few pages a very fine copy. With the circular printed ex-libris of baron Surmond. Rare and fine copy of an extraordinary publication in the history of book-illustration. The book contains 7 chromolithographies: 5 printed by Engelmann & Graf in Paris, 1 by Lemercier in Paris and 1 by Dagobert in Brussels. This last one is not a proper chromolithography because colour has been added by hand. The book contains also 17 full page woodengravings (8 signed by Brown), other engravers are Leloir, Lacoste, Vermorcken.See for artistic commentory on the woodcuts: ''J.H.M. Van Der Marck- De Romantische Boekillustratie in België ; pp. 171''. . The chromolithogaphy illustration used here , barely a few years after the invention of this printing process were imported from Paris as nowhere else existed yet the knowledge to print them. Very early example of a book illustrated with chromolithographs.
