This edition has been completely reset, as stated on the printer's page, and carries the same dustwrapper design as the first edition. Also stated on the printer's page is 'First Back Bay paperback edition, January 2001.' ***Please note that the front free endpaper has been torn out of this copy. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, and an embossed publisher's monogram to the front board. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, with no bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. There is no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. There is no foxing to the page block edges which are clean. Internally the book is also very good, with no inscriptions, but as mentioned, the front free endpaper has been removed by a previous owner (probably to remove an ownership inscription). Clean pages with no foxing, and no creases or tears. paper stock lightly tanned. ***In a very good dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of $25.99. The dustwrapper is complete, with no serious creases, chips or tears - just some rubbing and light creasing to the top of the spine. There are also some light marks to the white areas of the dustwrapper, and the red colour on the spine has faded. The UK edition has the attractive dustwrapper illustration by Fritz Wegner. ***Very good in light-blue cloth-covered boards with silve…r titles to the spine. The silver is still nice and bright. The boards are quite clean and unmarked, but there is browning and fading to the top and tail of the spine and edges of the boards. There is some creasing at the top of the spine and front board near the spine, with a small closed tear to the cloth. Small bump to the fore-edge of the front board. Corners sharp. The spine is tight with no reading lean. There is hardly any foxing to the page block edges, which are quite clean - the top edge just slightly darkened. Internally the book is also very good, with clean pages and just very light foxing to the first and last few pages. Small stain at the top corner of the front free endpaper. Original readers of the book have slightly creased the bottom edge of the pages where they have turned each page, but this is not very noticeable. No serious creasing and no tears. There is a neat contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper 'From John, Christmas 1951'. ***In what can best be described as a poor surviving example of the original illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped and retains the original publisher's printed price of 10s. 6d. net. Please note that the spine of the dustwrapper has completely gone, but the front and back panels and foldover flaps are still present! There are chips out of the top edge of the front panel, but Fritz Wegner's distinctive cover art is still largely complete. The back panel also has some loss at the top edge but this doesn't affect any of the text. Edge wear and small areas of loss at the corner tips and extremities. Small closed tear and associated creasing to the bottom edge of the back panel which is however quite clean. Original DJ is bright and attractive, and in near fine condition. DJ's only flaw is a tiny scuff on rear; otherwise fine. A most attractive, tight and clean First Modern Library edition, stated, in original first state DJ. NF/NF.

Measuring 8.5 inch x 11 inch; on one leaf of watermarked Corrasable Bond paper, R.D. 2, Windsor, VT, dated October 14, 1962. Within, the author acknowledges receipt of page proofs for Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction . Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope bearing philatelic markings and letter-opened at left. Featuring expected letter folds to typed leaf, with minor creasing throughout. Together with a photocopy of Woodman s original letter to Salinger dated four days earlier describing the proofs as remarkably clean , and praising its contents. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: an Introduction , was the final book-length work of fiction published in Salinger s lifetime. It is comprised of two novellas set seventeen years apart, and are both concerned with Seymour Glass, the eldest son of Salinger s fictional Glass family. Originally published in the New Yorker in 1955 and 1959, the two stories were reprinted as an anthology by Little, Brown and Company in 1963, just months ahead of the present correspondence. Condition of the book: a near fine copy and very close to fine for the harshest of judges. There are no previous owners inscriptions, no stamps, no bookplates. No bumps to the boards, no lean. The lettering on the spine is NOT rubbed out and clearly legible. Endpapers clean. The dust jacket is in amazing condition and one of the best we have ever seen. Crucially, this is in the original state with NO restorations whatsoever. It is not price clipped, clean with no tears, no chips, no rubbing. Light browning to spine commensurate with age and no fading of the red colour. A beautiful copy. The Catcher in the Rye needs no introduction. Being read in schools, it is one of the landmark novels of 20th century American fiction with global sales exceeding one million copies anually. The correct first-issue dust wrapper ret…ains the original $3.00 price at the head of the front flap and the Book-of-the-Month Club statement on the rear flap. The rear panel carries Salinger's portrait, credited to the photographer Lotte Jacobi, with the author's hair touching the upper edge of the panelan important distinguishing point of the first issue. Salinger's first and only novel follows Holden Caulfield during the days immediately following his expulsion from Pencey Preparatory Academy. The binding has a noticeable lean, with rubbing and dampstaining to the front board, with some light staining to the first three pages. Some softening to the spine tips and corners. The endpapers are darkened as is commonly found The original first-issue dust wrapper shows darkening to the spine and rear panel, together with creasing and small chips along the edges. There is separation along the fold between the spine and front panel. Despite these faults, the wrapper retains all the important first-issue points, including the original price and Salinger portrait. A genuine first edition of one of the most influential and collected American novels of the twentieth century, preserved in its exceptionally important first-issue dust wrapper.
