His lively interest in the world, his passion for art in particular, and his considerable charm put me at ease and the photos he began to take of us all seemed the usual record we keep of enjoyable occasions. Had the "shoot" been more formal, or at least in my case more conscious. I suppose I might have stiffened up a bit, or felt I needed to work more at composing with lain the image I wanted to present to the world. But it wasn't, and I didn't. So when he surprised me some months later with not a snap shot but a work whose artistry was clear I was able to look at the fellow portrayed and the strategy of portrayal with some objectivity.
