The modern sport and recreation of canoeing began when John MacGregor has a kayak built of oak and cedar, named it the ?Rob Roy? and in it traveled widely… on the rivers, lakes and seas of Europe and Near East. His exploits were reported in the national newspaper, and on his return he lectured and wrote books on his travels. All this captured the imagination of the parts of the day and they urged him to form a club. The Canoe Club was duly formed in 1866m becoming The Royal Canoe Club a few years later with Edward the Prince of Wales as its Commodore.
