Hardcover. Condition: Good. A wonderfully solid edition of this rather scarce book, bound in original dark-brown cloth with a leather spine. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright and clear. Both spine crowns are discolored and worn but are not torn or even softened. All four corners are softened and slightly bent with all four wearing through to the board but not frayed. All four corners are still holding their shape. There seems to be heavy foxing throughout the book but does not detract from its overall interior appearance. Both hinges are quite strong and there are no torn pages, markings, paste-downs, or signatures. 224 pages.

Decorative Boards. Condition: Very Good. The 1856 1st edition. Solid and VG in its chocolate-brown boards, with decorative blindstamping at the panels and bright gilt-titling along the spine. Spotting to the panels (more pronounced along the rear panel), very light wear at the spine ends. Internally very clean, with no writing or markings to speak of. 12mo, chapter headings include "Speed and Gait", "The Foot", "Anatomy of the Stomach", "Geographical Range of the Camel", etc.

Small 8vo, original blind stamped cloth, [2 add], 224 pp. Some rubbing and to the cloth, likely recased, lacking both free endpapers, pencil inscriptions to pastedowns, occasional margin stains within; otherwise about very good. Marsh was the American Minister to Turkey from 1849-1854, and believed that there would be economic and other benefits of introducing the camel into the United States. His book covers a broad range of issues relating to the camel, including breeds, diet, diseases, temperament and training. Marsh also includes a chapter on the military uses of the camel, which he felt was perfectly suited for modern warfare. According to Marsh the camel "is a much less timid animal than the horse or mule." He even felt the camel offers a better range of vision, because it is two feet higher than the horse. Sabin 44735.

Gile spine title. Near ontemporary ownership name in a few places, but a fine copy with only minor traces of wear. . Sabin 44735 .The author had spent time in Turkey, Egypt, Nubia, Arabia, Petraea, and Syria and was a proponent of the introduction of camels to the Unite States. Marsh wrote this during the tie then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis was considering the establishment of the U. S. Camel Corps. .

A scarce American treatise on the camel, with a focus on the practicality and uses of that animal in the American southwest. Marsh, an eminent lawyer and statesman, served as minister to Turkey under President Taylor and was later made minister to Italy by President Lincoln. He wrote on a wide range of interesting subjects, and was recognized as a sort of universal genius.

The author had long been fascinated by the possibilities of introducing camels to the US and spent some time residing in Turkey and traveling through Egypt, Nubia, Arabia, Petraea and Syria. This was written while the Secretary of War was experimenting with camel introduction in the US.
