First edition stated, first printing, with 1944 date on title page, also. WWII wartime conditions disclaimer, for paper conservation, printed in book and on DJ, with a Buy War Bonds advert on rear flap. Original DJ with $2.00 price intact on flap. DJ shows chipping on bottom left on front next to spine, and at crown, with shallow edge-chipping elsewhere. Red cloth panels stamped in black on spine. Cool vintage woodcut bookplate on front pastedown. Book is tight and clean. Flaws limited to six scuff marks on rear panel. Original DJ uses the Crime Club Bullseye symbol of a hand, designating the Crime Club selected this title for its outstanding character and atmosphere. The rare whodunit mystery set in New England, and a mysterious rare antique button, once belonging to Louis XIV. VG-/VG-.
