William Makepeace Thackeray (18 July 1811 24 December 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. During the Victorian era, Thackeray was ranked second only to Charles Dickens, but he is now much less read and is known almost exclusively for Vanity Fair. In that novel he was able to satirise whole swaths of humanity while retaining a light touch. It also features his most memorable character, the engagingly roguish Becky Sharp. As a result, unlike Thackeray's other novels, it remains popular with the general reading public; it is a standard fixture in university courses and has been repeatedly adapted for movies and television. In Thackeray's own day, some commentators, such as Anthony Trollope, ranked his History of Henry Esmond as his greatest work, perhaps because it expressed Victorian values of duty and earnestness, as did some of his other later novels. It is perhaps for this reason that they have not survived as well as Vanity Fair, which satirises those values. Thackeray saw himself as writing in the realistic tradition and distinguished himself from the exaggerations and sentimentality of Dickens. Some later commentators have accepted this self-evaluation and seen him as a realist, but others note his inclination to use eighteenth-century narrative techniques, such as digressions and talking to the reader, and argue that through them he frequently disrupts the illusion of reality. The school of Henry James, with its emphasis on maintaining that illusion, marked a break with Thackeray's techniques.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. William Makepeace Thackeray, the famed Victorian novelist and essayist, is principally known to modern readers as the author of "Vanity Fair"; however, Thackeray's literary output was prodigious and his contemporaries knew him not just as a novelist, but as a trenchant social satirist. The satirical element certainly shows up in "Vanity Fair", but elsewhere in Thackeray's works the element of satire is much more visibly on the surface. Such is the case with the book here in hand. "Burlesques" is a collection of satirical pieces that show of Thackeray's sense of the ridiculous, as he lampoons the foibles of society. This is the American reprint, published in 1885 by John R. Alden. the book includes the illustrations done by both the author and Richard Doyle. ///// This is a deaccessioned library volume, with labels and stamps to that effect. It is a book that displays a considerable amount of evidence for the history of its use. TITLE : Burlesques (Incl. Yellowplush Papers / Fitzboodle Papers , et al). AUTHOR : William Makepeace Thackeray (1811 - 1863). ILLUSTRATIONS : The Author and Richard Doyle. IMPRINT : John R. Alden. PLACE : New York. DATE : 1885. EDITION : American Reprint Publisher's Library Edition. PROVENANCE : Deaccessioned Library Volume. ///// Trade Hardcover; Contains several line illustrations; i - viii, [7] - 814 [ despite the discrepancy in pagination, the volume is complete]; approximately 5 1/8" x 7 3/4"; beveled boards with dark blue cloth and with title, etc. lettered in gilt on spine; top edge gilt; end-papers are graced with a densely repeating floral motif printed in light brown (or dark beige). ///// CONDITION : This is an X-Library copy, with library stamps, labels and markings. The library has stamped various pages, including the title page and , as well, I have spotted at least one page of text so stamped on the text. EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are compressed and display fraying - there is a library catalog label on the spine - moderate rub and spotting - title remains fairly bright. Boards display moderate rub and abrasion with scattered spotting and discoloration - most noticeable on rear board - edge wear is modest and corner tips are but mildly bumped - no library marks. Top text-block edge rubbed and dulled , fore- and bottom edges toned but fairly clear - no library marks. BINDING : Well read, and the text-block is slightly shaken - sits a bit loosely in the case; the leaves open widely, exposing binding threads - however no leaves are detached. INTERIOR : End-Papers are clean ; the front paste-down has a library bookplate, rear end-papers have remains of use ticket and a pocket (on the paste-down). There are library stamps (at least one impinging text), but basically the interior is clean and presentable, showing but modest signs of use.
