Niets kweekt vandaag meer voor- en tegenstanders, niets is meer controversieel en werkt meer polariserend dan dat simpele streven. Welke kunstenaar die zichzelf respecteert kan zich dat nog permitteren? Voor de een is het esthetische de essentie van kunst, voor de ander is het een element dat in een moderne kunstopvatting niet meer thuishoort, iets wat de intellectuele discussie in de weg staat. Het standpunt van Vekemans ter zake blijkt duidelijk uit wat hij al decennialang maakt. Het intellectuele discours doet er voor hem niet toe. Het kunstwerk is autonoom, het is goed of het is het niet, het moet maar voor zich spreken. Het is een vreemde vaststelling: zowel door de keuze van zijn onderwerpen als door zijn werkwijze creeert Vekemans bewust een afstand tussen werk en toeschouwer. Waar andere kunstenaars alles uit de kast halen om de toeschouwer deelgenoot te maken van hun eigen emotie, daar trekt Vekemans als het ware een barriere op. Emotieloos kun je zijn kunst niet noemen, maar felle gevoelens ontbreken geheel. Dit is een gedreven, maar niet een getormenteerd kunstenaar. Ook in zijn landschappen heerst een aparte sfeer. Ook die ademen een sfeer van verlatenheid, en ze zijn van een niet-klassieke, desolate schoonheid. Woont of leeft hier iemand? Stilte alom. Vekemans verliest zich niet in het detail. Schrijven is schrappen, luidt het adagium, en schilderen is weglaten. Hij is een meesterlijk weglater. En zo wordt de toeschouwer toch in het stuk betrokken. Behalve door de pure en evenwichtige esthetica van het werk wordt hij uitgenodigd om wat de schilder heeft weggelaten zelf in te vullen, om althans een stukje van het raadsel zelf opte lossen. Boeiender dialoog met een werk is moeilijk voor te stellen. 0 g.

His physical presence and the emotional experience of this study trip to Kinshasa made an overwhelming impression on Bruno Vekemans, both as a person and as an artist. At the centre of it all lies authenticity.Bruno Vekemans is a personality, and, beyond that, a man with a great deal of respect for other people, both in his daily life and as subjects.He retains everything of the authentic artist, and has been painting since the age of seven. Throughout his career, Vekemans has always maintained that he does not like to theorise or even philosophise about his work. His life and his mission are simply to paint. That reflexive response reveals how his art is a highly intuitive and everyday activity to him.The black people portrayed in Kinshasa have an individuality and naturalness no longer apparent in West Europeans. Vekemans' forte is painting. His earlier work consisted mainly of gouaches on cartridge paper but nowadays he mostly paints with oil on canvas or behind glass and some… work and/or studies using mixed techniques: gouache, aquarelle, and ink on paper. "In my paintings, I believe it is the image that counts, not the message. I do not want to express social commitment through my work. Reality is more overwhelming than imagination. How the paint was applied to the surface tells the story, not the actual rendering which is only of secondary importance." Vekemans has chosen resolutely for figurative painting. Images he found or images stored in his memory, but always recognisable and distilled from what is called "real life". He records these images using his own, personal style and without overshadowing conceptualism. His work does not make any sharp criticism, metaphoric reflection, and sociological considerations. Bruno Vekemans is only interested in the actual image, the picture that acquires power and authority through its own content. He shows scenes from reality which will make you quiver with emotion. His paintings depict moments of tranquility and intimacy although they are placed within the context of activity. Some viewers may experience melancholy, quietness or a special atmosphere but this is real beauty in the eyes of Bruno Vekemans. His palette reveals much about him: colours that balance between opening and covering but which are always intense and convincing. ---- Vekemans? grote sterkte is schilderen. Zijn vroege werk bevatte hoofdzakelijk gouache op cartridge papier, terwijl hij vandaag grotendeels werkt met olie op canvas of achter glas. Voor sommige werken/studies gebruikt hij gemixte technieken: gouache, aquarel en inkt op papier. ?In mijn schilderijen, is het naar mijn mening vooral het beeld dat telt, niet de boodschap. Ik wil geen sociaal engagement uiten door mijn werk. De realiteit is overweldigender dan de verbeelding. Hoe de verf aangebracht wordt op het oppervlak vertelt het verhaal, de uiteindelijke weergave is van minder belang.? Vekemans kiest resoluut voor figuratief schilderen. Beelden die hij vond en opsloeg in zijn geheugen, maar die steeds herkenbaar zijn en gedistilleerd zijn uit wat we ?real life? noemen. Hij legt deze beelden vast met zijn eigen persoonlijke stijl, zonder het conceptualisme te overschaduwen. Zijn werk maakt geen scherpe kritieken, doet geen metaforische reflecties of sociologische bedenkingen. Bruno Vekemans is enkel ge nteresseerd in het echte beeld, het beeld dat kracht en autoriteit uitstraalt door zijn eigen inhoud. Hij toon scenes uit de realiteit die je doen trillen van emotie. Zijn schilderijen geven momenten van rust en intimiteit weer, zelfs wanneer ze in een actieve context geplaatst zijn. Sommige kijkers zullen melancholie, stilte en een speciale atmosfeer ervaren, maar dit is echte schoonheid gezien door de ogen van Bruno Vekemans. Zijn palet onthult veel over hem: kleuren die balanceren tussen openen en afdekken maar die steeds intens en overtuigend zijn. Over de kunstenaar: Bruno Vekemans maakt deel uit van een lange traditie van Vlaamse schilders, een traditie die nooit doorbroken werd, zelfs niet toen de schilderkunst dood werd verklaard. Vekemans behoort wel tot die generatie die het uitermate moeilijk heeft gehad om als schilder aanvaard te worden. De Amerikaanse kunstcriticus Irving Sandler schreef over die periode: ?Schilderen in het pluralistische tijdperk heeft het voordeel dat de kunstenaars vrijer dan ooit kunnen schilderen, in de veronderstelling dat elke stijl een min of meer eerlijke waardering zal krijgen. Het nadeel is echter dat kunstenaars, zelfs de meest individuele en volwaardige onder hen, het steeds moeilijker vinden om de aandacht van de kunstwereld op zich te vestigen en erdoor erkend te worden.? Vekemans oeuvre heeft, vanaf het moment dat hij z?n drolerie n tekent in de jaren ?70 tot vandaag, een coherent verloop gekend, een bijna logische evolutie waarin slechts n grote breuk merkbaar was. Die breuk situeert zich rond 1989, toen hij besliste om de schilderkunst schilderkunst te laten zijn en geen voorwendsel om extra-picturale verhalen, kritieken of analyses te maken. Die keuze is hij de volgende twintig jaar radicaal blijven verdedigen. Maar zelfs de breuk verhindert niet dat er ook dan continu teit in zijn werk aanwezig blijft. Hij is de collagetechniek blijven hanteren, niet enkel technisch, als voorontwerp voor zijn schilderijen, maar - onbewust - ook filosofisch, als het samplen van de beeldcultuur van zijn tijd. Hij wordt een picturale bricoleur, in de zin zoals Claude L vi-Strauss respectvol bedoelde in La Pens e Sauvage, een man die met de handen werkt en bestaande dingen bij elkaar brengt tot iets nieuws. Vekemans is geen filosoof, geen geschoold virtuoos schilder, geen onderdeel van de artistieke beau monde, maar een werker die gefascineerd is door de beelden van zijn tijd, die hij obsessief herhaalt en herneemt, in een sober, harmonieus palet. En hij durft opnieuw wat zo lang verboden was in de kunst van de twintigste eeuw: plezier beleven aan het schilderen. - Jan de Zutter 2220 g.

De tentoonstelling, die tot 5 december loopt, geeft een overzicht van het werk dat Vekemans de laatste 15 jaar heeft gemaakt. In de tentoonstelling zal eveneens een selectie worden getoond van de nieuwe Havana-reeks waaraan Vekemans de afgelopen drie jaar heeft gewerkt. De nieuwe Havana-reeks die Vekemans schildert, is een vervolg op de Kinshasa-Congo-reeks waaraan de Antwerpse kunstenaar werkte tussen 2006 en 2007. Die serie brengt indringende portretten van gewone mensen die Vekemans in de straten van de Congolese hoofdstad ontmoette. Gefascineerd door de link tussen de Congo-cultuur en de Afro-Cubaanse traditie trok Vekemans eind 2007 voor het eerst naar Havana om daar opnieuw gewone Cubanen te fotograferen en te schilderen. Met de retrospectieve in het Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes krijgt de 58-jarige Vekemans eindelijk de internationale erkenning die hij verdient. 0 g.
