"Although Brachygraphy, or the Art of Writing in abbreviated Characters, is extremely ancient )for we read of its being practiced, in the Roman Senate, by persons whom Cicero instructed and employed for that purpose); yet, it was not introduced into our own country, till toward the latter end of the sixteenth century; when, in the year 1588, Dr. Timothy Bright printed a treatise entitled "Charactere, or the Art of short, secret, and swift Writing, by Characters;" which he dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, under whose Letters Patent it was published. The variatio, admitted into the edition now presented to the Reader, are the result of intense application, and experienced usefulness. At the same time that I have, by expunging a great number of needless characters, rendered a complete knowledge of the art more easily attainable, I have laboured (I trust with success) to make the system more comprehensive, and the characters more intrinsically legible, than has hitherto been effected." (Preface to the ninth edition).
