Vintage 1929 edition of the S-51 collision with the steamship City of Rome. This story is told step by step in Salvage language of the period along with bright sharp photos throughout the text. The inner hinges are strong and as new with no loose pages. Front and rear end papers are blue with diagrams of the attempts to salvage the S-51. Commander Ellsberg's books are direct and very hard to put down and I've read many of them.

McKnight Kauffer for the Literary Guild), pictorial endpapers, 324pp. The book Fine, the DJ Very Good, with a few tears and small losses. The book recounts the salvage of a US Navy submarine sunk in a collision with another ship, with the loss of its entire crew of 34. Ellsberg, 1891-1983 was a naval officer who served in both World Wars. He wrote numerous books, fiction and non-fiction, about ships, including a trilogy of novels about salvaging gold.

The task of salvaging the submarine fell to Lieutenant Commander Edward Ellsberg and a group of naval divers. The book is in reasonable condition apart from the hard cover which needs repair.

This compelling, technical yet dramatic account of the first successful open-ocean submarine salvage is considered a classic of maritime literature.  This copy is in good condition, with little wear and tear to the book itself. The inside cover pages have separated a bit from the rest, but all pages and photos are in excellent condition, given its age. As stated in the title, fifteen pages were printed upside down.
