Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Matheson's first hardcover publication, a collection of stories with an introduction by Robert Bloch, who later wrote Psycho. About 650 copies of this book had been distributed prior to a flood that destroyed the remaining bound copies, and a fire later destroyed the unbound sheets. Inscribed by Matheson to the horror writer Stanley Wiater, in 1992: "To Stanley -- with many thanks for the excellent interview in Dark Dreamers. Best always, Richard Matheson." Matheson's career began with placing short stories in the pulp magazines, and he later became one of the most important script writers for "The Twilight Zone." Ray Bradbury called him "one of the most important writers of the 20th century," and Stephen King cited him as "the author who most influenced me as a writer." A nice association copy. Wiater's bookplate on front pastedown. Lower boards show some water damage, text block fine, but still only a good copy in a good, damp-stained dust jacket with effects mostly visible on verso and rear panel. Unless otherwise noted, our first editions are first printings.

Add to basketCloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of this anthology of gripping science fiction works. This is the first anthology of Matheson's works, named after the first story in this book and his first published short story 'Born of Man and Woman' (1950). With an introduction by Robert Bloch. In original unclipped dustwrapper designed by Mel Hunter. This anthology contains seventeen stories by Matheson including Born of Man and Woman, Third from The Sun, Mad House, To Fit the Crime and Dress of White Silk. The titular work Born of Man and Woman is in the form of an internal diary kept by what the reader assumes is a deformed child chained in a basement and abused by its parents. Richard Matheson's work fits primarily in the genres of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is best known as the author of I Am Legend, which was published the same year as this anthology. A lot of Matheson's works are simple sketches with twist endings, always keeping the reader guessing. Matheson also wrote several television episodes for famous series such as Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. In original full cloth binding held in original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, excellent with just some minor bumping to the extremities of the front board and to the head and tail of spine. Dustwrapper is very smart with some chipping to the head and tail of spine as well as to the top edge of wraps. Some minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities as well as a few handling marks. Heavy rubbing to the front wrap also. Dustwrapper is also very slightly sunned. Evidence of repair to the top of dutwrapper at the front wrap. Preserved in an acetate wrap. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Michael W J of San Francisco. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean throughout. Near Fine. book.
