This book is a travelogue of Edwin John Dingle, an Englishman who spent six years traveling across China on foot during the early 20th century. This book is a detailed account of his journey, which covers over 4,000 miles and takes him through some of the most remote and dangerous regions of China. His journey begins in Shanghai and takes him through the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and Xinjiang. Along the way, he encounters a wide variety of people, including farmers, bandits, and Buddhist monks. He also describes the natural beauty of the landscapes he passes through, from the lush forests of the east to the arid deserts of the west. Throughout the book, he reflects on the cultural and spiritual differences he encounters in China. He is particularly interested in Taoism and Buddhism, and he spends time studying with various teachers along his route. He also observes the impact of Western imperialism on China, and he is critical of the way that foreign powers have exploited the country for their own gain. This book is a fascinating account of a remarkable journey, and it provides a unique perspective on China during a period of great change. His writing is vivid and engaging, and his insights into Chinese culture and spirituality are still relevant today. A clean very presentable copy.
