Broschiert. Condition: Gut. X, 264 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - altersgemäß sehr guter Zustand / very good condition for age - This book is the first full-length study to treat Boethius Consolation of Philosophy as a work of imaginative literature, and the first to apply modern techniques of criticism to his writings. The authors central purpose is to demonstrate the methodological and thematic coherence of The Consolation of Philosophy. He also seeks to ground Boethius literary career in the traditions of Latin dialogue literature from the first to the sixth centuries. He explores the ways in which Boethius manipulates the reader in his text, confronts problems of literary authority, and makes methods of interpretation themes for dialogue. -- The book opens with a discussion of the literary historical contexts of Late Antiquity and the consequences of the move of rhetoric and dialectic from public to private arenas. It considers the dialogues of Cicero, Augustine, Fulgentius, and the young Boethius, to show how their participants move away from discussing approaches to truth and toward a confrontation with the techniques of inquiry. The author then performs a close reading of The Consolation of Philosophy, charting the dialogue between the prisoner and Philosphy to show how her consolation involves the prisoners engagement not only with her moral advice but with her techniques of demonstration and disputation.
