Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1816. First edition, probably second issue, in four volumes. 363pp.; 340pp.; 349pp. but lacking half-title and title-page; 347pp. Tales of my Landlord is a series of novels by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) that form a subset of the Waverley Novels. They were so called because they were supposed to be tales collected from the (fictional) landlord of the Wallace Inn at Gandercleugh, compiled by a "Peter Pattieson", and edited and sent to the publisher by Jedediah Cleishbotham. This first series contains two novels - The Black Dwarf and Old Mortality. The Black Dwarf is set in 1708, in the Scottish Borders, against the background of the first uprising to be attempted by the Jacobites after the Act of Union. Old Mortality is set in south west Scotland, and deals with the period of the Covenanters, featuring their victory at Loudoun Hill (also known as the Battle of Drumclog) and their defeat at Bothwell Bridge, both in June 1679; a final section is set in 1689 at the time of the royalist defeat at Killiecrankie. The four volumes are uniformly bound in slightly later half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on the spines. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and wear to the titling on the spines. The corners are lightly bumped with some damage and a little loss to the leather on the corner tips. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few scattered light marks. Volume 3 is missing the half-title and title pages and there is some soiling to the first page and staining to the bottom 2" of the front free endpaper. A name has been written on the top edge of the half-title and title pages of volume 1, the title-page and first page of volume 2, the first page of volume 3, and the title-page and first page of volume 4. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy set and extra postage may be required for delivery outside the UK.
