Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This long out-of-print and newly rediscovered novel tells the story of two boys growing up in the cotton country of Mississippi a generation after the Civil War. Originally published in 1950, the novel's unique contribution lies in its subtle engagement of homosexuality and cross-class love. In ###The Bitterweed Path#, Thomas Hal Phillips vividly recreates rural Mississippi at the turn of the century. In elegant prose, he draws on the Old Testament story of David and Jonathan and writes of the friendship and love between two boys—one a sharecropper's son and the other the son of the landlord—and the complications that arise when the father of one of the boys falls in love with his son's friend. Part of a very small body of gay literature of the period, ###The Bitterweed Path# does not sensationalize homosexual love but instead portrays sexuality as a continuum of human behavior. The result is a book that challenges many assumptions about gay representation in the first half of the twentieth century. Originally published in 1950, The Bitterweed Path tells the story of friendship and love between two boys growing up in the cotton country of Mississippi a generation after the Civil War. A fine example of the southern literary tradition, the novel is also part of a very small body of gay literature of the period. As such, it challenges many assumptions about gay representation in the first half of the twentieth century. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. HILLIPS, THOMAS HAL. The Bitterweed Path: A Novel. New York and Toronto: Rinehart & Company, Inc., 1950. Hardcover 1st Edition. Thomas Hal Phillips' novel tells the story of two boys growing up in the cotton country of Mississippi a generation after the Civil War. Originally published in 1950, the novel's unique interest lies in its subtle treatment of same-sex love across class lines. The Bitterweed Path vividly invokes life in Mississippi at the turn of the twentieth century. In elegant prose drawing on the Old Testament story of David and Jonathan, the author tells of the relationship between two boys--one a white sharecropper's son, the other the son of the wealthy land owner, a man whose own attentions complicate the plot when they fall upon his son's friend. . Part of a very small body of gay literature of the period, The Bitterweed Path does not sensationalize homosexual love but instead portrays sexuality as a continuum of human behavior. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR S FIRST NOVEL some cloth wear, spine edges damaged, writing 1st blank page otherwise clean and tight BB1.

Black boards lightly rubbed; gilt and blue stamping to spine remains bright; slender scuffing at spine ends and at board corner tips. Some foxing/toning to text block edges and endpapers; past owner's ink inscription on front pastedown; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A vey good+ copy. Exceptionally uncommon first novel by Corinth, Mississippi-born author and Hollywood screenwriter and actor Thomas Hal Phillips whose fiction efforts, although obscure, are highly regarded. A United States Navy World War II veteran and 1943 graduate of Mississippi State University, Phillips completed a master's degree in creative writing at the University of Alabama under the tutelage of renowned instructor Hudson Strode where his thesis evolved into this first novel which is among the earliest in the genre of American overtly themed gay literature and, in further challenging period stereotypes, being notable in both its Deep South setting and being by a southern author. Phillips followed THE BITTERWEED PATH with five other novels - THE GOLDEN LIE (1951), SEARCH FOR A HERO (1952), KANGAROO HOLLOW (1954), THE LOVED AND THE UNLOVED (1955), and RED MIDNIGHT (2002).
