From the introduction: "This volume is devoted exclusively to English grammars written in English by Englishmen, Americans, and in one or two cases foreigners, as well as a very few grammars written in Latin by native speakers. The material included corresponds to that section in Kennedy's bibliography extending from nos. 5687 to 5994, but I have adopted a more rigorous definition of what constitutes a grammar than did Kennedy. Thus, the following sorts of books are specifically excluded here : (1) spelling-books containing abstracts of grammar ; (2) miscellaneous works, epistolary manuals, &c, containing brief grammars ; (3) dictionaries containing grammars ; (4) polyglot grammars; ( 5) grammars of English written in foreign languages, as well as grammars written in Latin by foreigners and published abroad." Even with these exclusions, there are listed here over 1200 items - nearly four times the number reported in the relevant section of Kennedy's bibliography. Appendix I lists all towns other than London at which such works were published There are indexes of anonymous titles; Authors; and Subjects, Editors, Revisers, and Translators. Covers slightly scuffed, otherwise Near Very Good.

From the preface: "The material covered by this volume corresponds to material found in three sections of Kennedy's Bibliography: nos. 5698-5990, 7327-7366, 7797-7886. Works dealing essentially with pronunciation are excluded, as are very elementary works containing nothing more than the alphabet and a few syllable lists. .Because of the educational interest which the title-pages of most spelling-books have, I have included facsimiles of the earliest located editions of most of them. Unfortunately, a number of those which survive in unique copies are in such a fragile condition that they could not be photographed." Covers slightly scuffed, foot of spine bumped, otherwise Near Very Good.

Add to basketLimited edition of 500 copies. Green cloth-backed boards, gilt cover device, 4to, 28 cm, xvi, 115 pp, 37 plates (some fold-out). 300 entries. From the preface: "This is the first volume in which I have had to rely on principles of selection since, although it purports to include all works dealing specifically with logic written in English, it also includes material drawn from the very considerable corpus of work on philosophy and epistemology published before 1800. The decision to include only works which seemed to me to be of fundamental importance for the history of the relationship between linguistic and philosophical theory, and the changing attitudes to the function of language in the ratiocinative process, has inevitably resulted in choices (both of inclusion and omission) which may seem odd.The inclusion (I hope comprehensively) of works on logic written in English requires neither explanation nor apology, but the decision not to include works written in Latin, though in keeping with the scheme adopted in other volumes, was perhaps an unhappy one. Mindful of the fundamental importance of these works in the history of logical theory I have therefore provided in the Appendix a short-title list of the most important treatises published in England and Scotland up to the year 1700. The section dealing with "Universal Language" has been included in this volume because the works concerned have an obvious and intimate connection with one trend of philosophical enquiry in the seventeenth century, conditioned no doubt by the gradual disuse of Latin as an international language. ".
